Traffic Manager
Web version
This month we did the first installation of the Web version of our Traffic Manager. Everything is running fine and we are sure this version will soon become a must have.
Like in the Windows client/server version, Traffic Manager Web allows your users to follow up their fax traffic through a simple interface. Your users are able to see the fax history, status, see the incoming faxes and even resend faxes by fax or email! The Web version includes new features, as printing a report, printing a sending proof or display statistics.
No need to install multiple client interface. You just have to install it once on your Web Server and all your users can access it! Easy, secured, and a real need for your users.
Traffic Manager Web is sold as a Traffic Manager's option. So you will still be able to install Windows client if you prefer.
Here are some screenshots:
You want to see it for real? Send us an email and we'll show you!
Max/400
Small story
One of our prospect (and now customer) is using a 520 iSeries with a 7390 CPU that gives him 500 CPW with only 30 CPW for interactive jobs. He tried MAX/400 which frees the interactive limitation.
During the trial he said his users are not saying anything, but as soon as the trial ends his users are complaining again and he decides to immediatly order MAX/400!
Conclusion: A user knows your phone number when he has to complain, but he forgets it when everything is fine ;)
FaxStar MailGateway
Service mode
Some customers asked us why it is not possible to run the MailGateway as a Windows service. Here is what the development team answered:
- This function existed under Windows NT 4.0 but had to be stopped from Windows 2000 where the service behaviour has been changed by Microsoft.
- By the way this behaviour has been re-inforced under Windows 7.
- The document conversions are done using the Windows "Print DDE" command. This command has to be sent during an interactive session.
- Moreover, if the conversion needs an answer (for instance "are you sure you want to print?"), the answer must be visible.
- If the DDE command ends anormaly, we need to know it so the session must be active.
- So if we go in servce mode, the whole conversion will be done in a second interactive session on which we won't have any possibilty to interact with.
But... the develpment also added the following:
- The active window can be locked even from a short period of time (10 seconds after the boot for instance).
- An Autologon function can help you to automatically open a Windows session.
- You can install the MailGateway on a different machine where FaxStar is running. Both machines will then talk using named pipes.
So now you know the whole story!

Hoctoplus Monthly Tip
Service mode
Since we were talking about the service mode, it's a good idea to explain you how you can set up FaxStar as a Windows service. Please note that when running in service mode, you won't see anything, so it's always less easy to see if everything goes fine. But if you sill want to do it, then here is the tip:
- Press CTRL+C on the FaxStar Advanced Server Window
- Click on the "About" button
- Click on the "Install Service" button
- The service is now added to the Windows services list. From now you can close the FaxStar window and run the service.
If you want to run FaxStar in interactive mode again, just make sure the service is ended and then start FaxStar using the icon on your desktop.
