In this issue, we'd like to talk about the fax protocol and specially regarding the compression modes. We will then present some news regarding our Traffic Manager module.

The Fax protocol
When 2 fax machines are communicating, they are exchanging some datas like:
- their speed limit ; at first they begin the communication at their maximum speed, but if errors happen they can limit their speed to 1200 bauds ; under this limit, the ommunication is closed.
- their CSID (Customer Subscriber Identification) which is an information you can find in the fax header ; this information is important because even if the CSID is incorrect, receiving a CSID means that the fax has been sent.
- horizontal compression? A fax is a 300 DPI image and for each line sent, instead of sending all the dots, the fax machine only send the number ot white/black dots.
- vertical compression? Instead of sending each line, the fax machine sends the 1st line, and then only the difference between the line and the previous one. The it sends a new line every 20 lines.
- Error Correction Mode? With ECM fax is sent in multiple sequences. Each sequence is verified once it has been sent, If there is an error, only this sequence is resent.
This is the theory. It often happens that known brands does not respect those rules andin those cases we need to change some settings to ensure the compatibility.

We have made some changes to our "Traffic Manager" application in order to answer some questions. The new version is larger and more clear.
As a reminder, Traffic Manager is a Windows based application that helps yours users to follow up their Fax traffic. It exists in 2 versions:
The light version has the following functions:
- no user limitation
- usergroups and dedicated rights
- traffic follow up using a table
- up to 10 FaxStar Advanced Server
the full version has those additional functions:
- display the image of the sended/received faxes

- treeview traffic follow up
- deletion of pending faxes
- 2nd level details
- Resend option

Send SMS with accents from your iSeries
If you own a FaxStar SMS license to convert your spooled files into SMS you may encounter problem with accents. If you want FaxStar Advanced Server to manage accents on SMS you need to add a DWORD value named DoOemToAnsi (set to 1) in HKLM/Software/Sepe Inc./Catalina/Config/SMS.
Of course, you need to restart the FaxStar application to apply the changes.
